Bug Out At The Butterfly Conservatory

February 6th, 2016 to March 28th, 2016

The Montréal Insectarium will be occupying the Butterfly Conservatory's main atrium from February 6 to March 31. This family friendly exhibition is included complimentary with your admission to the conservatory and features a variety of educational displays along with live specimens including varieties of Praying Mantis, Flower Beetles, Cockroaches and Scorpians.

This 90-minute, family-focused workshop is held by the Monarch Teacher Network of Canada, a growing network of educators and nature enthusiasts.

Learn about the life story of the Monarch butterfly, learn about its epic journey to the mountains of Mexico and create a take-home milkweed seed ball for your garden or open space. You'll also construct a Monarch lifecycle plate to remember all the stages where our actions can help protect this iconic orange and black butterfly.


Make your Garden Monarch Friendly

This 90-minute, adult-oriented workshop is held by the Monarch Teacher Network of Canada, a growing network of educators and nature enthusiasts.

Learn about how we can help ensure a vibrant and healthy habitat for the decreasing overwintering Monarch population. You'll learn about the lifecycle and biology of the Monarch, threats to its population, native plants that attract the butterfly and best practices for monarch-friendly gardens. You'll also transplant germinated milkweed sprouts for your own garden space, as well as create a holding cage to cover your plant, offering a layer of much-needed protection for the vulnerable monarch eggs and caterpillars.

Many gardeners want to grow organically, but what does this mean? Organic agriculture is a holistic production system designed to optimize productivity and encourage diversity in the ecosystem. This hands-on workshop will provide a microscopic view of some of nature's best backyard warriors for natural pest control, bio-friendly alternatives for controlling common yard pests (aphids, earwigs, slugs and snails), and alternative methods for creating a chemical-fee yard that is safe for you and your family.

Many insects and birds provide a valuable function and we reap the benefits; locally grown produce is dependent on, yes that's right, bugs!

Learn how to create an ideal home for pollinators of the region, bring home a pollinator plant kit and start your very own Pollinator Paradise! All plant materials are provided by Willowbrook Wholesale Nurseries, Medallion Plants and the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory.

Dragon's Den Auditions

It’s time for entrepreneurs across the country to polish up their pitches to be part of Dragons' Den! The audition tour welcomes participants of all ages, with businesses at any stage of development. Aspiring entrepreneurs should prepare to pitch their concept to the Dragons' Den producers in five minutes or less. If they show the producers they have what it takes to pitch in the Den, they could be invited to Toronto to face the Dragons. Prospective pitchers are encouraged to apply online and bring a completed application form to the audition.
